Abstract

over the past decade, the growing complexity and diversity of projects worldwide has driven project-oriented organizations to adopt a project-focused approach. These organizations generate enormous amounts of knowledge from their projects; however, they typically do not fully benefit from the knowledge gained from previous or similar projects, and they remain at risk of losing this knowledge when project teams disband.

This research aims to address this issue and propose solutions by presenting the challenges of knowledge management within project-focused organizations and suggesting the Project Management Office (PMO) as the most effective solution to overcome these challenges. To achieve this, an extensive literature review was conducted on related studies, and a comprehensive theoretical framework was developed emphasizing the role of the PMO in addressing the challenges of implementing knowledge management and applying lessons learned in project-based organizations.

The findings indicate that, due to its connection to all organizational projects, the PMO can function as a bridge linking various knowledge streams across project teams and business units. This, in turn, supports overcoming the challenges associated with implementing knowledge management in project-oriented organizations.
